History

Delroy Smith learned his craft working alongside world-renowned tailors on Savile Row, including the late Douglas Hayward

A Third Generation Tailor

As a third-generation tailor, Delroy Smith follows in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, JB Smith. At the age of 17, Delroy started working for Gucci and was heavily influenced by the beautiful tailoring that surrounded him. Fine clothes and styles inspired his love, and passion, for creating the most beautiful garments. It was here he decided to continue the family trade, and went on to begin a 2-year course studying traditional, bespoke tailoring at the London College of Fashion.

Immediately after leaving the London College of Fashion, Delroy was offered an apprenticeship with military and theatrical tailors, Costello and Sons. It was here, under the tutelage of Murt Costello and his sons, that he learnt the very intricate and technical process of cutting for film, stage, military and civilian.

After 5 years, Delroy made a defining career move to work and study under the most influential tailor of the swinging 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, Douglas Hayward of Mount Street. He spent 10 years working with Douglas Hayward, and learning about clients who were highly influential in film, television, and media. He was taught to make the traditional and authentic cut that is, to this day, still highly sought after by many since Douglas Hayward has passed away.

His time at Haywards gave him the opportunity to both cut and make for clients such as Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Caine, Sir Jackie Stewart, Ralph Lauren, Michael Winner, Terry Stamp, Terry O’Neill, Peter Yates, John Barry, Michael Parkinson, Sir John Mills, and many more.

It was after Douglas Haywards passing that Delroy was afforded the opportunity to work with the world-famous Kilgour French and Stanbury, on the world-famous Savile Row. This gave Delroy the opportunity to take his skills around the world doing trunk shows in the USA, France, Spain, Germany and Hungary, vastly extending his client book by making for captains of corporate industry, the fashion world, athletes, musicians and actors.

The Legacy Continues

Delroy has now taken his years of experience and launched his own tailoring house, Delroy Smith Master Tailor, where he continues to work with a team of the best craftsmen – some of whom have been with him since his days at Hayward.

In addition, his loyal clientele have continued to follow him wherever he goes, as they enjoy the bespoke experience that Delroy offers, in combination with his extensive knowledge and craftmanship. His style is now a continuation of what Douglas Hayward taught him, so now the Hollywood elegance, style and high standard quality of bespoke tailoring continues to live on.
